Case Study:

Iron Acton 120 Megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site

Project overview

At the Iron Acton 120 Megawatt BESS site, Heighway delivered LV installation works across the 132 compound control room and HV room, alongside high-capacity DC and AC cabling installation to battery assets and skids. The scope included containment, distribution, changeover arrangements, multi-core control wiring including SCADA works, and earthing throughout the system.

What we delivered

LV containment and distribution

We installed LV containment and completed distribution wiring to support site power and operational systems, including supply routes from auxiliary transformers to distribution boards.

This included:

  • All containment within the 132 compound control room and HV room
  • Distribution wiring from auxiliary transformers to distribution boards via auto and manual changeover switches

Control room wiring and SCADA works

Within the customer control room and the 132 compound, we installed and terminated multi-core cabling to support control and monitoring functions, including SCADA-related works.

This included:

  • Wired, glanded and terminated all multi-core wiring within the customer control room and 132 compound, including SCADA works
  • Wired, glanded and terminated all multi-core wiring within the customer DNO control room and 132 compound, including SCADA work

Earthing and bonding

Earthing and bonding formed a key part of the installation scope to support safe operation and compliance across exposed conductive parts and site systems.

This included:

  • Earthing of all panels and exposed conductive parts
  • Above-ground earthing on the BESS

DC and AC cabling to battery systems and skids

Earthing and bonding formed a key part of the installation scope to support safe operation and compliance across exposed conductive parts and site systems.

This included:

  • Earthing of all panels and exposed conductive parts
  • Above-ground earthing on the BESS

Delivery approach

This BESS scope required consistent workmanship across containment, distribution, control wiring, heavy cable installation, and earthing, with careful attention to termination quality and system organisation.

By managing these workstreams as one coordinated LV and cabling package, we supported a clean, structured installation across control room environments and the wider BESS infrastructure.
