Project overview
Claydon Solar Site required coordinated delivery across multiple voltage levels, with mechanical build activities inside the 132kV compound supported by 33kV cable installation and extensive LV works within the customer and DNO control rooms.
Heighway provided structured, safety-led delivery with clear phase sign-off, ensuring every element of the build was installed, tested, and documented in line with project requirements.

What we delivered

132kV mechanical build
We completed the 132kV mechanical build, installing key steelwork and primary plant components to support the wider HV infrastructure.
This included:
-
Mechanical build at 132kV, including installation of steel structures
-
Installation of insulators and bars
-
Installation of earth switches and disconnectors
-
Installation of CVTs, EMVTs, and HAM Unit
-
Delivery supported using our own HIAB and operator for controlled handling and positioning

Operation, alignment and functional testing
To support safe, correct operation and readiness for later stages, we carried out hands-on functional checks and verification activities on critical equipment.
This included:
- Operating and testing the functionality of earth switches and disconnectors to confirm correct alignment
- Carrying out 200 AMP ductor testing
- Phase signing of each aspect of the build to confirm completion and readiness before progressing

33kV installation
The project also included 33kV cabling works to connect switchgear through duct routes to the ETX via the PTX, supported by relevant terminations and testing to confirm cable integrity and performance.
This included:
- Installation of 33kV cables through ducts from switchgear to ETX via the PTX
- All relevant terminations and switchgear works at ETX, PTX and NER
- Relevant sheath testing and VLF testing

LV installation
Alongside HV works, we delivered LV containment, wiring, and termination inside both customer and DNO control rooms, including distribution, lighting, small power, and multi-core control cabling.
This included:
- All containment within the 132 compound customer and DNO control rooms
- Installation of small power and lighting within the customer and DNO control rooms
- Distribution wiring from ETX to distribution boards via auto and manual changeover switches
- Wired, glanded and terminated all multi-core wiring within the customer DNO control room and 132 compound, including SCADA works
- Earthing of all panels and exposed conductive parts
Delivery approach
This project demanded disciplined sequencing and clear control of interfaces between mechanical build, cabling, testing, and control room works. By managing work in defined phases and signing off on each aspect as it was completed, we maintained clarity across delivery and supported safe progression through each stage of the build.
